Nauke Guest Houses
Do You Know the Nauke Guest Houses?
In the late 1880s Martin Julius Nauke with his wife Anna (born Dittmann) and his brother Adolf Nauke owned and operated "Gasthaus zum Langen Hause" ("The Long House") located at Hirschgraben 2 in Hirschberg Schlesien (now Jelenia Gora, Śląska, Poland). Martin Julius managed the brewery and bakery, Adolf managed the sausage factory, Anna managed the lodging and dining. During this time Martin Julius Nauke and Anna Nauke had eight children. Five of the eight survived. Martin Herbert Nauke was the sixth child. It is not known if all of the family lived in the Long House or had rooms nearby at Bahnhofstrasse 64, a large building owned by Martin Julius's father.
Sometime just before the turn of the century, The Long House was sold and Martin and Anna along with all the children moved to the town of Schweidnitz, Schlesien (now Świdnica, Śląska, Poland). There they owned and operated "Martin Nauke's Etablissement Preussischer Hof" ("The Prussian House") at Waldenburgerstrasse 27. This is where Martin Herbert and his siblings grew up. It is also how and where the Nauke and Häfner families first met. When Martin Herbert Nauke and Gertrud Häfner were just 16 years old, Gertrud and her parents lodged at the Nauke Preussischer Hof guest house while they operated their Schwebe-Bahn (Zip-Line) amusement ride at the Schweidnitz annual festival. Sometime in the early 1900s Anna Nauke sold the Preussischer Hof and purchased a smaller guest house in Schweidnitz at Äussere Kirchestrasse 27 directly across from the famous Friedenskirche (Peace Church). It is not known what became of Martin Julius Nauke. She owned this guest house until her death around 1915.
